About Fatality Free Friday - the day that started the ARSF movement

Our founder, Russell White, had a concept in 2007 to encourage Australia to go one day without a fatality, that day the last Friday in May which became Fatality Free Friday.

Since its inception in 2007, Fatality Free Friday ignited a passion in many to do more and the single day became a month and the Foundation was born. The ARSF’s Fatality Free campaign in May has continued to expand its operation and is now recognised as one of Australia’s largest national community- based road safety program.

ARSF’s Fatality Free Friday initiative is about much more than just a single day. It operates on the belief that if we can go one day without a death on the road, we can demonstrate the impact a focus on road safety can have every day of the year.

Road safety is a global issue that ranks as one of the most pressing matters facing society today. The social, economic, and emotional costs are immense, and these figures are poised to increase unless something is done, now.

The Fatality Free Friday campaign, which takes place during May every year is a month long campaign that encourages road users are encouraged to get involved and to take personal responsibility to help make a significant reduction in road trauma.

We are also aiming for a longer-term community change.

Since the first campaign launched ARSF has been on a path to create significant change in behaviours on and around the road.

Research conducted by ARSF proves that road safety campaigns are powerful and provide the ability to positively change road user behaviour and attitudes.

*Almost 9 in 10 Australians say road safety messaging makes them a better road user.

Our national campaigns, partnerships and programs have educated more than 200,000 individuals across schools, workplaces and communities and achieved a reach of over 400 million impressions, working toward a future where every journey is safe and every life matters.
